Coastguard chiefs brought in after fire broke out on a cargo vessel off the west coast are confident the accident will not lead to any pollution threat.

Salvage crews were continuing to work on damping down the huge blaze on board the Yeoman Bontrup on Sunday - two days after the fire started.

The operation has been hampered by the remote location of the ship, at Glensanda pier on Lochaber's Morven peninsula.

Calum Murray, watch manager with Clyde Coastguard, told STV News: "There is no road access to the area - the access is only by boat or by helicopter. It's a very remote part of the country. It's a very big operation due to the locality, which is very remote, and the weather conditions, which made it very difficult to transport people and equipment to the scene.

"The ship is carrying approximately 800 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. It is, at the moment, secure in the tanks and there's no threat at the present time of pollution.

"The ship is in no danger where it is - there's nothing to puncture the tanks to release the oil into the sea. If the vessel had sunk due to the fire or grounded due to the excess water being pumped into her, she may have punctured her tanks and that would have led to pollution, but that is not the case now. We're lucky."

The blaze broke out on a conveyor belt that was being used to load the 100,000-tonne vessel, which is registered in the Bahamas. Gas cylinders on board the ship exploded as the fire spread.

Mr Murray said he understood the damage to the ship was extensive.

"The fire was very serious. It appeared to go out of control and they had to evacuate the ship," he said. "I think the damage to the vessel's engine and accommodation is extensive. It may not be going anywhere for a while."

Coastguard crews have been continuing to damp down the outside of the vessel in an effort to prevent any fires inside from spreading.

An investigation is expected to be carried out into what caused the fire.
