The funeral has been held for a young scout leader who fell to his death while climbing in the Cairngorms.

Stephen Young, 18, from Kent, fell through an ice shelf - known as a cornice - on Creag Meagaidh last month.

His mother June and his uncle were part of the experienced adult group.

The teenager was airlifted to hospital in Fort William where he was declared dead.

Hundreds of mourners turned out for a celebration of Stephen's life at Rochester Cathedral in Kent on Tuesday.

Many wore scout uniform and bright colours in tribute to the teenager.

FAMILY TRIBUTES

His mother spoke of the ‘hole’ her only son’s death had left in her life in a statement released at the time.

She said: “He meant the world to his whole family and we feel truly blessed to have known him for 18 years.

“Stephen was a unique young man who has clearly touched the lives of so many people.

“He did everything with enthusiasm and lived life to the full.”

The open ceremony was followed by a private service at the Medway Crematorium for family only.

In 2007, Stephen made local and national headlines by sleeping outside in a tent every night for a year to raise £2,500 for charity.
