A mother-of-two has been jailed for 18 months for a late-night knife attack in a Wick street.

Tanya Pinnington, 28, was high on valium when she twice slashed a man on the face after believing he was stealing her partner’s bicycle.

Pinnington was appearing for sentence at Wick Sheriff Court having previously admitted assaulting Hugh Simpson by repeatedly striking him on the head with a knife, to his severe injury.

Mr Simpson, 45, was returning home after a drinking session when he picked up the bike of Pinnington’s then-partner which he believed was blocking traffic.

As he did so, he was challenged by Pinnington who took a Stanley knife out of her pocket and used it on him.

He sustained a five inch cut along his jaw line and a three inch cut to his cheek under his left eye.

The court heard that Pinnington has empathy with her victim and is “absolutely mortified” by what she did.

Ms Stevenson said Pinnington has since remained drugs-free.

The court also heard that the incident “an extreme wake-up call” for her and she has since taken steps to go on the “straight and narrow”.
