Two children have been left orphaned after surviving a horror crash in which their mother was killed.

Eleanor Campbell died in a three-car smash on the A9, just two years after her husband Mark suffered a fatal asthma attack.

The tragedy left their six-year-old son Iain and two-year-old daughter Isabella, who were travelling in their mother's car, injured.

Sixty-four-year-old company director Douglas Keith, a married father of one, also died in the smash.

The smash happened on the A9 on Thursday just after 7.20pm at Crubenmore, near Dalwhinnie.

Mrs Campbell's Mitsubishi car was involved in the pile-up with Mr Keith's Honda and an Audi.

It is the second tragedy to hit the family.

Her husband Mark died as a result of a sudden asthma attack two years ago when his wife was pregnant with their daughter.

Mr Keith, managing director of Highland-based Daniels Sweet Herring had been driving north from Edinburgh, where his flight from a business meeting in London had been delayed.

He leaves a wife, Fiona, and 14-year-old son, Jonathan.

Colleagues at his workplace in Grantown-on-Spey were left devastated by news of his death.

Alistair Salveson, chairman of the Domfresh Group, of which Daniels belongs, issued a letter to the 30 staff, saying: "It is with the deepest regret we announce the tragic and sudden death of Douglas Keith, who was killed on the A9."

Friend Tony Evans, operations manager at Daniels, said: "It is tragic. Everyone here is devastated. I am in a daze.

"Douglas was one of the founders of the company 30 years ago and was respected by everyone at the company.

Mr Evans added: "He had been on a business trip down in England with Marks and Spencers.
"He had just flown back to Edinburgh but the flight was delayed. He was late on the road driving back to his family in Inverness when the accident happened.

"Our prayers are now with his family."

Mrs Campbell's two children were injured in the crash, but their conditions are not described as life threatening. The man in the third car involved was slightly injured.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: "A full collision investigation will be carried out and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
