People across the North are being encouraged to “light up a life” this festive season, as Highland Hospice launches its annual Christmas tree campaign.

Lights are sponsored on trees by members of the public to reflect the celebration of the life of someone special, or to act as a tribute to those who have passed away.

Thirty one special ceremonies will take place across the region this year

Organiser David Welsh says it is a poignant time.

He said: “This year we’re really encouraging people to celebrate the gift of life. Possibly over the last few years we’ve been remembering people who’ve passed and we’re still very much doing that this year.

“But we also want people to support us and to support the gift of life of people close to them – of people who can’t be with them because they’re working overseas, maybe in the armed forces or offshore.
