A baby badger has been rescued after being found in a rabbit burrow.

The five-week-old female cub was found by a member of the public in the burrow in Torphichen, near Bathgate. It is thought that she may have been abandoned by her mother and is now an orphan.

She has been named Bracken by staff at the Scottish SPCA’s Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fife where she is being hand fed until she is old enough to fend for herself.

Centre Manager Colin Seddon said: "Badger cubs don't usually come out of the sett until they are about eight weeks old.

"We're not sure how Bracken ended up in a rabbit burrow. She has maybe been dragged out by another animal or something has happened to her mother.

"She's far too young to fend for herself so we are hand rearing her until she is feeding herself and is healthy enough to be released."
