They are used to fighting on the frontline but members of the armed forces can now enjoy a calming game of golf courtesy of a generous club.

West Lothian Golf Club is offering a free round of the popular sport to soldiers, RAF airmen and navy personnel to thank them for their service to the country.

Alan Gibson, general manager of the club explained where the idea came from.

He said: “It started out at the AGM, one of our members who was in the forces was quite keen to do a scheme for the guys to come up and enjoy a bit of golf after their tough time on tour. I think we are the first golf club in the UK to do something like this.

“We’ve had a lot of phone calls coming through so I think it will be popular - it’s a lovely setting and it’s nice to escape.”

Regimental Sergeant Major Paul Wood from the 1 Scots visited the club on Tuesday to try out the course.

He said: “I think it’s pretty fantastic of them to be doing this. When we return it can be quite hectic and to experience something like this is great.

“I think it will be very well received – we have got a lot of good golfers in the battalion anyway so I think they will be taking them up on their offer.”

Members of the armed forces can play for free from Monday to Thursday at 2pm. A preferential rate is also available for those who can’t make 2pm.
