A woman was assaulted and robbed as she walked along a busy Edinburgh street early on Friday morning.

The 30-year-old was on South Clerk Street at around 6.15am when she was approached by a man.

She ignored him and walked on towards Nicholson Street, but he continued to follow her. She then produced her phone, at which point the man pushed her and stole the phone, before fleeing towards Rankeillor Street.

A police spokesman said: "The victim was left understandably shaken by this experience and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in or around Nicolson Street around 6.15am on Friday morning and perhaps witnessed the robbery.

"'We would also be keen to hear from anyone who might recognise the description of the suspect and would urge them or anyone else with information that can assist with our enquiries to contact police immediately."

The suspect is described as black, between 6ft 2ins and 6ft 3ins tall with a slim athletic build, short black hair and a clean shaven face. He was wearing a beige T-shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
