Police have launched an attempted murder probe after a man was stabbed in an unprovoked attack as he opened his front door in Edinburgh.

The 43-year-old suffered serious injuries after being attacked with a blade on his doorstep in the city's Magdalene Gardens on Sunday night. He remains in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but is said to be in a stable condition.

A police spokesperson said: "This has been a vicious assault leaving the victim seriously injured in hospital.

"We are asking for anyone who was in the area around 8.30pm last night and may have seen something suspicious, to contact us as soon as possible.

"Alternatively, we would like to hear from anyone who recognises the description of the man responsible, or who has any information at all regarding the incident."

The attacker is described as a white male, around six foot tall, gaunt and between 40 and 45-years-old. He was wearing a three-quarter length smart jacket and dark trousers. After attacking his victim, he ran off.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
