The body of a 44-year-old man has been recovered after a pick-up truck plunged into water off Methil docks.
Police said the yellow vehicle had been earlier stolen from workers the Forth Road Bridge about 20 miles away.
The body of a the man was recovered from the vehicle in the early hours of Thursday morning. He has been identified but officers are still working to inform his next of kin.
A post mortem examination will now be carried out and the procurator fiscal has been notified.
The truck had been used by staff on the crossing on Wednesday, shortly before being stolen from the bridge. It was being followed by police when it fell into Methil Dock number 3 at around 4.20pm. The van is not thought to have been travelling at speed and police say it remains unclear why it ended up entering the water.
Fife Police have now called in officers from another Scots force to assess police involvement prior to the incident.
Superintendent John Pow said: "Central Scotland Police, who have assisted in the recovery of the mans body and the vehicle have also been invited to review the circumstances of Police involvement prior to the vehicle entering the water at Dock 3.
"Witnesses have identified themselves to the police in relation to this enquiry and I would issue a further appeal for people to come forward that may assist us."
