One man has suffered a broken jaw and another has been injured after they were subjected to an unprovoked assault in Edinburgh.
The pair were walking in the city's Lauriston Place at around 3am on Thursday when they were approached by a group of five men. A row broke out and while one man escaped unscathed, a 39-year-old had his jaw broken and his 38-year-old friend suffered facial injuries.
They were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.
A police spokesman said: "This was an unprovoked assault that resulted in one of the victims sustaining a serious injury, and we are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area of Lauriston Place in the early hours of this morning, who saw what happened, to contact us immediately.
"In particular, there were a number of passing motorists who are likely to have witnessed the assault, and we are keen to speak to them as soon as possible.
"Anyone else who has any information that can help our inquiries should also get in touch."
All five suspects are described as being white, in their mid-twenties, with local accents.
