Police are hunting a would-be armed robber who struck twice in one night in Edinburgh.

The man tried to rob the Leith Walk branch of Pizza Hut at knifepoint on Monday, before trying to mug an elderly woman who was walking behind a sheltered housing complex on Gordon Court near Easter Road.

Both times, he was wearing a green balaclava.

In Pizza Hut, staff refused to hand over cash when he pounced sometime between 8.30pm and 9.15pm.

Then, at around 9.30pm, the masked suspect approached the 77-year-old victim and demanded she hand over her cash. He then walked off down Manderson Street when she refused.

A police spokesman said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Leith area last night, who may have noticed the suspect, to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises his description, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch."

The suspect is described as between 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, of medium build and with fair, 'curtain style' hair. He was wearing a green bomber jacket and grey trousers.

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
