Police are appealing for information following two separate, unprovoked attacks which happened within two miles of each other in Edinburgh.

The first incident in the early hours of Sunday saw a man and a woman attacked by a gang travelling in a car.

The pair were walking at the junction of Easter Road and Albion Road at around 12.30am when a small white car pulled up alongside them. A man and woman jumped out and attacked the couple before stealing the woman's mobile phone.

It is thought the attackers were travelling with three other people, possibly two females and a male, who were seen standing beside the car during the attack.

A police spokesman said: “This was an unprovoked assault, and we are keen for any information that can help us track down the suspects.

“We know that there were a number of people who were in the area while the assault took place, and we want to speak to any witnesses as a matter of urgency."

The male suspect is described as white, in his twenties, 5'10", with dark hair and a fat build.  He was wearing a white knitted jumper.

The female is described as dark skinned or mixed race and in her late teens.  She is five foot tall, of medium build and had dark hair tied back in a ponytail with a long fringe.  She was wearing a dark green top and black ankle boots.

Police say a second assault at 3.30am the same morning is being treated as unrelated.

A teenage girl and her older sister were the victims of an unprovoked attack on the city's Earl Grey Street.

The 15 and 27-year-old victims were outside Omni Furnishings they were attacked by two males and a female. Both victims were taken to hospital after being punched repeatedly.

A police spokesman said: “This was a violent attack made all the more shocking because it was completely unprovoked.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who either witnessed the incident, or who saw the suspects in the area of Earl Grey Street in the early hours of Sunday morning."

All of the suspects are described as being white, 19 to 20-years-old, and around 5'6" tall.

The first male had short blond spiky hair, blue eyes and a distinctive jawline, and was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. The second male suspect is described as slim, with cropped dark brown hair and wearing a black padded jacket.

The female suspect is described as slim, with shoulder-length peroxide blonde hair. She was wearing a black and white 'herringbone' jacket with a pink top and black leggings.

Anyone with any information on either attack is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
