Pupils prepare to say goodbye to school building

Former pupils in their 70s will be among those returning to say goodbye to their former high school building in Edinburgh on Thursday.

After ten decades on the same site in McLeod Street in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh, Tynecastle High School is moving to a new building across the road (pictured).

The school's 560 current pupils will be inducted into their new facility at the end of their Christmas holidays in January.

However, to mark the occasion, an open invitation has been extended to its thousands of former pupils to return to the building for one last visit.

The History Department are hoping pupils from throughout the past century will assist them in creating a record of the building's past, while current pupils will use video blogging to record their thoughts and memories.

Headteacher Tom Rae said: "Tynecastle High School has provided education of the highest standard to the children of its local community for the last hundred years. It continues to offer wide and varied learning experiences to all its young people."

He added: "The school building, however, which has served the local community well, is now outdated. The new Tynecastle High School is rising before us. Each day we can see another layer of the building structure.

"The new school will bring us firmly into the 21st century and we will now have a first class educational facility that will allow innovative teaching and learning”

The new building will welcome pupils for the first time in January 2010.
