Private nursery branded "totally unacceptable" by inspectors

A private nursery in Musselburgh has been warned it could be closed down if it doesn't radically improve its standards.

A joint inspection by education inspectors and the Care Commission revealed "totally unacceptable" standards of care and learning at Butterflies Nursery.

Owners, Happitots Day Nurseries Ltd have now been ordered to take immediate and comprehensive improvement action. Inspectors said up to 120 babies and infants were not receiving acceptable care because there were too few qualified and competent staff.

Ronnie Hill, the Care Commission’s Director of Children's Services Regulation, said: “We work vigorously to root out poor and unacceptable practice and take swift action to ensure improvement.

"We want to assure parents that the safety and welfare of the children using the service is our priority at all times.”

The joint inspection was carried out in September as part of an integrated programme of inspection by the two regulatory bodies.

The nursery has been served with six requirements for improvement and its management team has already submitted a detailed action plan for delivering the improvements.

It includes ensuring enough staff are working, providing suitable ventilation and arranging sleep mats correctly to minimise the risk of cross contamination.

Mr Hill said a number of further visits had been carried out since the inspection.

He added: “We are happy to see that the service has been responding positively to the requirements and that important changes have been made.

“We will continue to closely monitor the service to check that improvements are completed to our satisfaction.

“If improvements are not made or the service continues to fail, we will not shy away from taking enforcement action. In extreme cases this may lead to the closure of a service.”

About time this nursery was closed down... I reported this nursery to the care commission and removed my child last May for exactly the reasons in this article... Absolutely disgusted its been allowed to continue for another 18mths after my complaint was upheld...

My family have been using this nursery for years. I along with many other parents believe the quality of care to be excellent. The staff team have been there for years. Surely the childcare is more important than paper trails. The inspection earlier in the year shows a true reflection on the nursery which is a good one.

Until recently I was working in a private nursery in Musselburgh (not butterflies), I am qualified and loved my job but some of the rules and regulations the care commission put in place are beyond a joke. The daily routine should be about caring for the children and giving them the care and attention that they deserve, not being made to stand and put childrens clean nappies in individual nappy sacks to combat cross contamination. This is not only time consuming and taking staff away from caring for the children but a complete waste of time as this will not stop any cross contamination, as the care commission states it will. This is only one of the stupid rules that is enforced on our working day. I am all for rules and regulations and the care commission being there as a governing body to ensure we all work to rules and ensure the safety of our babies and young children but sometimes children need the input and stimulation each day rather than a pile of paper work with their name on. My neighbours child attends this nursery and cannot speak more highly of it.
