A banker has been jailed for 12 months after he admitted stealing more than £40,000 from his branch safe in Edinburgh.
Alan Bremner admitted nabbing the cash while on shift at Clydesdale Bank on the city's Croall Place between November 2005 and October 2008.
Fiscal depute Gerard Drugan told Edinburgh Sheriff Court an investigation was launched after staff spotted the safe was short of large sums.
Mr Drugan said: "An internal inquiry was carried out and the sum of £40,140 was missing.
"As a result of that Bremner admitted straight away he was responsible for the theft.
"He was suspended from duties and police officers were contacted."
Defence agent Phil Moore said: "It was an extremely unsophisticated offence.
He added: "He has brought shame on himself and those close to him."
The court heard Bremner's parents had repaid the cash and that he intended to pay them back as soon as he got a new job.
Mr Moore said his client was a low risk of reoffending and asked for him to be handed a community sentence.
However, Sheriff Graeme Warner told the 33-year-old from Middlesex Gardens, Glasgow, that custody was inevitable due to the amount of money involved and the breach of trust.
He said: "I am sure you understand with your financial background that financial institutions, if they are to work at all, require individuals at the bank to be trustworthy and reliable.
"That begins to fall down when someone such as yourself comes along and breaks that trust."
The sheriff said he had reduced Bremner's sentence from two years to reflect his early guilty plea and the fact the cash had been returned.
