A murder investigation was launched today after the death of a man in the early hours.
Police said the 25-year-old man died after an argument in Main Street, Lochgelly, Fife.
He was taken to Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, at around 2am but died hours later.
The street was cordoned off and local diversions were in place while officers gathered evidence from the scene.
An incident room was set up at Cowdenbeath Police Station from where the investigation will be co-ordinated.
Detective chief inspector Dougie Milton said: "Our investigation is clearly still at an early stage.
"This incident has happened in a public street and we believe that a number of persons were in the vicinity who may well have witnessed this vicious assault.
"I would encourage any person who has any knowledge of this incident to contact us."
