Kitten almost died after drinking toilet water with bleach in it

A kitten almost died after drinking toilet water with bleach in it.

Amelia MacFarlane returned to her Edinburgh home to find her new pet, Willow, acting unusually quiet.

The feline soon started foaming at the mouth and she was taken to the PDSA vet hospital for treatment.

When her owner checked the toilet, she saw paw prints inside which showed Willow had drunk the water. Vets confirmed the animal had been poisoned by the toilet freshener block inside the water.

Ms MacFarlance said: "We’d only had Willow a short time, but she’s such a boisterous, playful kitten that I immediately knew something was wrong; she was so subdued. Then she started drooling and foaming at her mouth, plus I noticed her tongue was red-raw, so we immediately called PDSA.

"We knew that Willow loved playing with water, so we put two and two together and checked the bowl. The little paw prints inside confirmed our suspicions and I realised that she must have drunk some of the water, and the toilet freshener block in there must have poisoned her."

Vet Graeme Eckford flushed the bleach out of the tiny cat’s system and the next morning she was allowed to go home. The kitten will have no permanent damage.

Mr Eckford said: "Willow was very sick as the block was bleach based, so she was immediately given medication to relieve any discomfort, and was also put on fluids to flush the poisons out her system. Thankfully, she responded well and the outlook was good."

Toilet fresheners are now banned from the house but the experience has not put Willow off playing with water.
