Two terrapins found wandering around park after being dumped

Two terrapins have been found abandoned and wandering around a park.

The reptiles, who have been named Laurel and Hardy, were spotted by a member of the public in Westfield Park in Falkirk at around 4pm on Monday.

Staff from the Scottish SPCA, who are now looking after the animals, think they have been someone’s pets until recently as they are in a good condition.

Laurel and Hardy are now being cared for at the animal welfare charity’s Edinburgh rehoming centre.

Animal rescue officer Jenny Hamilton said: "Laurel and Hardy were on the loose in the park where they were found so, sadly, it appears they have been dumped there.

"Both are in reasonably good condition and it's likely they have been someone's pets until recently.

"Unfortunately, exotic creatures such as terrapins regularly arrive in our care either because they are unwanted or having been abandoned. This is mainly due to people taking on these pets without considering that they are a long term commitment, living for up to thirty years.

"There is also a boredom factor with these animals because owners can't take them for a walk or cuddle and play with them. It's a real shame because, with the right owners, they can make excellent pets and provide hours of pleasure and enjoyment.

"We are very keen to identify who owned Laurel and Hardy and we are appealing to anyone who recognises them to contact us as soon as possible."
