An explosion was caused by a thief trying to cut through a live electrical cable, police have revealed.
Emergency services were called to Dixon Court in Whitburn, West Lothian just before 11pm on Wednesday after residents heard a loud bang.
A length of live electrical cable had been cut through, causing a flash of light and electrical surge.
Officers believe someone was trying to steal the cabling when the explosion happened. The person could have electrical burns or other injuries.
Lothian and Borders Police are asking for anyone who saw anything to come forward.
Inspector Ian Moffat said: "We are still trying to establish the full circumstances of this incident. However, it appears an attempt has been made to cut through the electrical cable to remove it.
"Whoever was responsible put their life in serious risk and there is potential that they may have suffered electrical burns or other injuries. We are keen to trace those who were at the site last night and anyone who can help identify them is asked to contact police immediately.
"Aside from the obvious cost implications, metal theft can also make an object unsafe for use and put the public in danger."
Anyone with any information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
