Police officers hailed heroes for rescuing woman from burning flat

Three police officers have been hailed as heroes after rescuing a woman from a late night flat fire.

The officers, two men and one woman, forced entry into the second floor flat on Buccleuch Street, Dalkeith, where a living room blaze had been reported at around 10.20pm on Tuesday.

Acting quickly, they led the 50-year-old woman to safety, before fire crews arrived at the scene.

After emerging from the building, the three officers and rescued woman were treated for smoke inhalation before two of the officers and the resident were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The police officers are now being considered for meritorious awards for their actions.

A police spokesman said that the officers had been greatly assisted by neighbouring residents.

He added: "Lothian and Borders Police responded to an address in Buccleuch Street, Dalkeith at around 10.20pm on Tuesday, May 8 following reports of a fire.

"On arrival, three officers forced entry and removed a woman from a property before she was taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition is not believed to be life threatening.

"The officers will now be considered for a meritorious award for their bravery."

Ten further residents from neighbouring flats were also evacuated from the building before Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service arrived at around 10.30pm.

Seventeen firefighters spent more than two hours extinguishing the flames.
