Teenager who died after falling from cliff is identified by police

Arbroath Cliffs: Teenager was airlifted to hospital but paramedics were unable to save him.

An 18-year-old who died after falling from cliffs in Arbroath has been named.

Lewis Lowe, from Dishlandtown Street, Arbroath, was found injured at Arbroath Cliffs on Friday.

Emergency services were called to the area at around 11.40pm on Thursday after the teenager was reported missing.

After a search officers found the seriously injured teenager at around 4.30am on Friday.

He was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but died before arriving.

Mr Lowe’s mother Wendy Mills said her son had recently found out the cause of a mystery illness which had put him in hospital and meant he occasionally needed a wheelchair.

She said: "He'd been ill for two years and they'd only just found out what was wrong.

"It was a gene deficiency and he would have had to be on medication for life.

"He would never get better but he was stable. He had everything to live for."

She added that Lewis often went to the cliffs to think and had gone on Friday night following an argument.

She said: "He'd just had a fall out with his girlfriend. He used to go out there to think.

"They said he'd lost his footing.He was a silly boy who stayed out too long, came back in the dark and slipped."

The search had involved police officers with a police dog, coastguard and a search and rescue helicopter from Kinloss.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said a report on the matter would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
