An SPL footballer has been arrested over an alleged disturbance at a popular night spot.

St Johnstone forward Derek Riordan was arrested at the HMV Picture House venue in Edinburgh's Lothian Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

It has been reported that the 29-year-old became involved in a confrontation with a bouncer.

He is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court later this month.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault and breaches of the peace following a disturbance at the Picture House in the early hours of May 7. He is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on May 30."

Mr Riordan signed for St Johnstone on a short-term contract in March 2012.

He has been capped three times by the Scotland national football team and also played for Hibernian and Celtic.
