Fire fighting: The incident happened at around 5.20am on Friday.STV

An elderly couple had to flee their Glasgow home after a fire was deliberately started.

The 84-year-old man and his wife, 83, were woken by a loud noise at their property in Old Castle Road, Cathcart, at around 5.20am on Friday.

When they went to investigate, they found their kitchen and basement on fire.

Emergency services attended and discovered a wheelie bin outside the kitchen window that had been deliberately set on fire.

The couple were treated for minor injuries at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

Detective Constable Marc Kelly said: "It is beyond anyone's understanding why someone would deliberately set a fire to an elderly couple's bin and then place it outside their window.

"Thankfully the elderly gentleman and his wife have not been injured, but obviously they are very, very upset that someone would do this to them and their home."

Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact police on 0141 532 4900 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
