A 16-year-old boy was robbed at knifepoint by a man who pulled up alongside his victim in a car.
The teenager was walking along Newbattle Road in Dalkeith, Midlothian between 5.30am and 6am on Wednesday.
A white Honda pulled up beside him as he got near Newbattle Abbey College and a man jumped out and threatened the victim with a knife.
The robber demanded the boy hand over his iPhone, gold ring and some cash before getting back in the car and driving off towards Newtongrange.
The attacker was white, in his early 20s, of stocky build with strawberry blond shaved hair.
Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses as they try and track down the man responsible.
A spokesman for the force said: "While the victim wasn't injured, he was understandably shaken as a result of being robbed at knifepoint, and we are appealing for any information that can help us identify the suspect.
"Anyone who was in or around Newbattle Road between 5.30am and 6am on Wednesday, who either witnessed the incident or saw a white Honda car being driven in the area, should contact police immediately.
"Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch."
Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
