Labour to launch Euro election campaign

Labour will launch its campaign for the Euro elections on Monday with a pledge to fight for jobs for Scotland.

Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy and Labour Holyrood leader Iain Gray will team up with Glenis Wilmott, the East Midlands MEP who is Labour's leader in Europe, to officially get their campaign under way.

The party's six candidates for the June 4 election - including current MEPs David Martin and Catherine Stihler - will also be at the event in Glasgow.

At the launch, Mr Martin will stress that Labour's Euro politicians are "determined to play our part in creating a fairer Scotland where we get back on track and fight for jobs".

He will say: "The overwhelming desire is for politicians to work together through this economic crisis.

"That is what defines the Scottish Labour Party - passionate about Scotland, determined to help middle income and modest income families, and always prepared to work internationally to solve the great problems of the world."

Meanwhile Mr Gray will accuse the SNP of "just not doing enough to help people".

And he will say: "To overcome this economic crisis, we need to work together - MSPs, MEPs, MPs all working in harmony.

"There is no division of responsibility for getting out of recession, because there are no Scotland-only solutions. We have to work together across the UK and across Europe, and focus on jobs."
