Dundee residents have been encouraged to use health and sustainable travel to boost well-being and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

YouTube BMX star Danny MacAskill arrived in Dundee at the weekend to help launch Dundee Travel Active.

The initiative is led by Dundee City Council and is backed by the Scottish Government's Smarter Choices, Smarter Places initiative for the next three years.

Attending the launch in the City Square was Paralympic double gold medallist, Aileen McGlynn; health minister Shona Robison; Councillor Will Dawson and Dundee Lord Provost, John Letford.

Ms Robison said in a statement: "It's really important that we provide ways to make it easy for people to be more physically active in their everyday travelling.

"Getting out of the car and off the couch makes us feel better about ourselves and also reduces the risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and stroke.

"The many initiatives which will take place in Dundee through, Smarter Choices Smarter Places over the next two years - and in six other places in Scotland - will provide valuable lessons on how we can get millions moving."

Mr Dawson said: "We already have a number of exciting and innovative activities lined up to get more people thinking about their health and sustainable travel, including cycle training for families, a personalised travel plan for members of the public and the creation of short-term bicycle rental schemes."

The project will also encourage greater use of public transport and use of local facilities to reduce car journeys.

Physical barriers that put people off walking such as narrow paths or poor lighting will also be addressed.
