Facelift planned for tourist site

Enterprise leaders are planning a major overhaul to boost tourism in John o' Groats.

The famous site, the most northerly point on mainland Scotland, already welcomes 250,000 visitors every year.

However, some critics have hit out at the resort.

The trusted Lonely Planet Guide termed the area a "seedy tourist trap".

The landmark has seen its only hotel close down for safety reasons, discouraging tourists from making the trip.

However, local business bosses are proposing some changes to combat negative impressions.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise is formulating a blueprint to transform the tourist site.

The redesign will include shops, restaurants, and a new hotel.

Heritage Great Britain, owners of the John o' Groats Hotel, have voiced their support for the rejuvenation and are eager to work on developing the location.

Roy Kirk from Highlands and Islands Enterprise said: "A lot of people do enjoy the experience but a lot of people know John o' Groats, they know what it is in terms of geography - they're not quite sure what it stands for.

"So I think we were looking at probably a new retail offering next, with some of the traditional craft that we have; some extra food and beverage accommodation models; and indeed some interpretation around both the great Viking heritage as well as the energy stuff that's happening."
