Parents have staged a sit-in at two closure-threatened schools in a bid to save them from the axe.

More than 20 people have occupied neighbouring Wyndford and St Gregory's primary schools in Glasgow's Maryhill.

Police have already asked the group to leave, but were met with refusal.

"We're trying to save our children's education and their safety," said Nikki Rathmill, whose five-year-old son Ross attends Wyndford.

"The support we've been getting has been amazing. I've had about 300 texts from all over Britain and even one from Italy since this started.

"We're determined to stay for as long as it takes."

The schools are among 13 primaries and 12 nurseries Glasgow City Council is proposing to close or merge. Wyndford Primary would close and pupils would be transferred to Parkview Primary, and St Gregory's would also shut with pupils being moved to St Mary's Primary.

A decision will be taken later this month after a consultation closed in March. A number of demonstrations have already been held outside the City Chambers and at the schools involved.

11 parents and friends are currently in Wyndford, with a further 11 in neighbouring St Gregory's, according to Ms Rathmill.

"The parents who have staged these school occupations have shown tremendous courage and principle," Glasgow Safe Our Schools campaign organiser Richie Venton said.

"Parents are fighting for the future of kids across the city, and deserve a huge show of support from the rest of us, not just from the Maryhill community but beyond."

A GCC spokesman said: "We held a six-week consultation exercise on our school estate strategy, which included 46 public meetings, and we received more than 8000 formal responses. These are currently being collated and councillors will receive a comprehensive report.

"No decisions will be made on any of these proposals until a meeting of the full council on April 23."
