Customers and workers at an Banffshire pub had to be treated for sunstroke after a bar boss accidentally installed powerful ultraviolet lights by mistake, it emerged on Friday.
The flourescent bulbs behind the bar at the Pub in the Square in Buckie were unintentionally replaced with bulbs normally found in sunbeds.
Staff and drinkers stood under the lights for hours, with barman Morgan Smith suffering severe burns to his neck.
It was only when bar staff complained of headaches and feeling dizzy that the error came to light.
One casualty had to be taken to hospital in Elgin but no one is believed to be seriously harmed.
Pub regular Stephen Blake said: "I thought it was a joke at the time, but obviously it has become more serious.
"I believe there a few skin problems and someone else was complainig about their eyes hurting from the ultraviolet light."
Sally Walker, of The Tanning Studio, said: "I think for everyone involved it is the eye area that is very delicate.
"We use protectors here as you can burn the iris and you can burn the retina. It can be pretty serious."
A spokesman for the pub said they take all matters of Health and Safety seriously and the rather unusual mistake was being investigated.
