Glencoe Hospital, in Ballachulish, is to close with the remaining three patients being transferred to a nearby nursing home.

An open event including a tour and refreshments will be held on Monday, the hospitals last day.

Gill McVicar, NHS Highland's mid-highland community health partnership (CHP) general manager, said the six-bed hospital had played an important role in the community for over 50 years and she thought some people may wish to pay a final visit before it closed.

The building was originally a family home before becoming a war-time hospital, maternity hospital, cottage hospital and, most recently, as a facility for the care of older people.

The CHP is working with Glencoe Heritage Trust to produce a commemorative booklet which will show the different uses of the building since first becoming a hospital.

Mrs McVicar said: "There are people in the local community who have connections and affection for the hospital. Some have worked, been born, or have been cared for there and they may like to have the opportunity to visit again and to share their memories."

Six new rooms have been created at Abbeyfield Ballachulish Care Home to enable it to accommodate the patients from Glencoe Hospital and it has been granted dual registration as a nursing home and a care home by the Care Commission.

Staff from Glencoe Hospital have been seconded to the care home for a month to help the patients to settle in.

The hospital building is now no longer needed by NHS Highland and will be sold.
