Tayside Police have teamed up with the Bike Worx from Dundee to promote children's cycle safety.

The cycle shop is to give school pupils across Dundee a leaflet offering 50% off any bell, make of helmet and 50% off one set of torch 3 LED bike lights.

The staff at the company will also undertake a free bike safety check with a 15% discount on any repairs needed.

Sergeant Kenny Bell, said in a statement: "Bikes are an efficient and eco-friendly way of travelling, as well as being fun and an excellent way to keep fit.  However they are not risk free.  Children love the speed and independence gained by having a bike, no matter their age."

He added: "Somewhere in the region of 70% of all cycling deaths and half of all accidents involve a head injury.  Research has shown that helmets reduce these injuries by up to 85%.  Your child should have a good quality helmet and use it at all times - it may save their life.

"Lights and reflectors are legally required on both the front and rear of the bike, as well as on the spokes and allow your child to be seen in the dark and in bad weather.

"High visibility clothing, even something as simple as a reflective sash is a cheap and effective way of making your child visible on the roads.

Sergeant Bell also cautioned youngsters to ensure that bikes were well maintained and he advised that parents to undertake regular safety checks.

He explained: "Safety checks that should be carried out on your bike include having properly inflated tyres, keeping gears oiled and tightened to prevent them fro coming off. Make sure the saddle and handlebars are straight and adjusted to the correct height."

Tayside Police also reminded parents to keep bikes secure at home.

Seargent Bell said: "Unfortunately bikes are a prime target for thieves and Tayside Police deal with hundreds of thefts every year in Dundee alone. Make sure you buy a good quality lock and always use it - it only takes seconds to steal an unattended bike.

"When not in use store the bike in a locked garage or shed, or within the house.  Have the frame stamped with your postcode and take a photograph of the bike."
