The family of an 11-year-old boy who died suddenly at home faces an anxious wait for answers after his post-mortem was delayed.

Paramedics found Michael Burns in cardiac arrest when they were called to his house in Dundee's Longtown Place shortly before 8am on Thursday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination was expected to take place at Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital on Friday, but is now unlikely to happen before next week.

Police inquiries have been taking place into the cause of death and a family liaison officer has been appointed.

As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Liz Crawford, acting head teacher at Michael's school, Rowantree Primary, said: "We are absolutely devastated by this tragic news.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.

"We are working closely with the education department to ensure that support and counselling is in place for pupils."

A Tayside Police spokesman said: "The post-mortem is not now anticipated to take place before Monday."
