Campaigners are celebrating the decision to ditch the name "Edinburgh Harbour" because it failed to recognise Leith.
Forth Ports have renamed the area "The Harbour, Leith Docks".
But critics say the move is a cynical ploy by Forth Ports to deflect attention from their poorly thought-out plans to redevelop the waterfront.
The plan to redevelop Leith Docks represents the biggest planning application to come before a Scottish council since the new towns were built.
The £700million scheme includes 16,000 new homes, as well as shops, parks and hotels.
Forth Ports were adamant that they would not change their decision to call a section of the development Edinburgh Harbour, despite a 4,000-signature petition calling for Leith to be included in the title.
However, Forth Ports has now relented. Now it will be The Harbour, Leith Docks.
According to Ross McEwan and Shaeron Averbuch, Forth Ports want simply to appear to be a listening company.
The pair have set up Joined-Up Master Planning, which opposes Forth Ports' ideas for Leith and the current master plan.
Mr McEwan said: "They'll now be able to turn round and say 'look, we listened to the public; we've done what the public wants - what more do you want us to do?'
"So I think it will deflect from the bigger issues, which is the type of development."
