Scotland escaped the worst of the arctic chill that caused chaos elsewhere in the UK. Predictions of heavy snowfalls failed to materialise as most of the country instead woke to rain and milder temperatures.
Snow fell across southern Scotland on Tuesday. The Teviot hills in the Borders received 20 centimetres and Eskdalemuir in Dumfries & Galloway had 11 centimetres.
stv weather forecaster Sean Batty said the snow, which hit large parts of southern and central Scotland on Monday, could move back across land from the north on Wednesday.
He said: "Most areas can expect at least a dusting of snow during the course of Wednesday evening and night, with higher elevations seeing between five and 15 centimetres."
It will remain cold and wintry through the week for most of Scotland, he added. The temperature was expected to fall on Tuesday night to minus six degrees in Dumfries & Galloway.
