Dates to watch as events unfold on the budget:
Wednesday, January 28: Finance secretary John Swinney resubmitted the same Budget Bill proposals, minutes after they were voted down in Holyrood.
Thursday, January 29: The bill - the same as the one rejected on Wednesday - is formally "introduced" to the Scottish Parliament.
Wednesday, February 4: The date on which, under Alex Salmond's preferred timetable, the new Budget Bill would have its Stage 1 debate in parliament.
Tuesday, February 10: Stage 2, when the bill is considered by the Finance Committee - where only ministers can bring propose amendments.
Wednesday, February 11: Anticipated final, Stage 3 Holyrood debate and vote.
February 14-22: Should the political process hit a snag, this nine-day period - now designated for recess - would likely to be cancelled by ministers.
Looking beyond…
If the budget falls again, the SNP could call for an election or other parties could try to form a new administration.
Under Holyrood rules, if a motion of no confidence in the First Minister is supported by 25 MSPs, a vote is taken in parliament.
If this vote is carried, MSPs have 28 days to appoint a new First Minister.
If no First Minister is chosen, a general election is called.
