Community artworks add to Wick's facelift

Bremner's Walk in Wick has seen the arrival of three pieces of community art.

The Pulteneytown People's Project commissioned the three solid marble artworks after receiving funding for the community artworks.

Pulteneytown People's Project chief executive Katrina MacNab told the John O'Groat Journal: "The three pieces were inspired as a result of an artist working with the community. It allows the community to take ownership of the improvements as their children and our hobbies groups took part in designing them.

"The street has had a major facelift which includes new pavements, street lights, CCTV and now these artworks. The upgrade was achievable due to a £100,000 contribution from Albyn Housing Society - the commitment from Albyn was then used to attract small amounts of funding from the Scottish Government and other organisations."

Ms MacNab stressed that the money was only available for environmental upgrades with artworks and could not be used for anything else.

She said: "The project is almost complete and the community have been involved in putting in plants, laying bark and tidying up the area.

"The CCTV can be very effective as long as the community phone into the police station if they see anything. This allows the cameras to be 'zoomed' in and to catch any incidents at close range.

"This evidence can then be used without needing to involve witnesses. How effective it is will depend on the community."
