Ninth brush with death for explosion survivor

An Aberdeen barmaid who was working at the Drumtochty Arms Hotel when it exploded has survived her ninth brush with death, after going through five terrorism attacks, three car crashes and now a gas explosion.

Barmaid Danielle Ormond had just started her shift at the Drumtochty Arms Hotel in Auchenblae. When a customer complained about his beer she went to check a keg.

The last thing she remembers was smelling gas.

A liquefied petroleum gas tank at the back of the hotel exploded, burying Ms Ormond under the debris.

The woman was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary along with one of the bar's customers and a kitchen fitter who had been working on the recently refurbished hotel.

But Wednesday night's explosion is far from Ms Ormond's only close call.

The 26-year-old has survived two IRA bomb attacks in London while on trips with the Brownies, a car bombing in Blackpool, an attack by the Basque separatist group ETA in Barcelona while on a family holiday, and in 2007 she was in Glasgow Airport when a burning Jeep was rammed into the entrance.

As well as this she has survived three serious car crashes.

Ms Ormond is now making a good recovery in hospital. But when she comes home little will be left of her workplace.

Demolition work has started at the hotel which had only just undergone £750,000 refit.

Locals hope that the hotel - which housed the only bar in the village - will be rebuilt.

But Ms Ormond's family are just grateful that her luck held out - though she has now possibly used up her nine lives.
