A chartered accountant who was born in Fraserburgh is the new chief executive of the Law Society of Scotland.

Lorna Jack is to return to Scotland after spending six years in the US working for Scottish Development International, part of Scottish Enterprise.

Ms Jack, 46, started her new position on Monday and will spend the first few weeks in her new job meeting Scottish legal and civic leaders.

The Aberdeen University graduate told the Press and Journal: "I can't think of a better time to return to Scotland with the focus on Homecoming and returning to our roots. Scotland is my home and has always been in my heart. The time was right to return.

"This is a period of unparalleled change for the society and for the legal profession and I'm looking forward to working with the staff and council of the society in leading the profession."

This year the Scottish Government legislative programme will include the Legal Profession Bill which will make changes to how law firms can operate.

It is hoped these changes will allow for better access to legal services for the public and businesses as well as allow Scottish solicitors to succeed in the competitive Scottish, UK and international market.

Law Society president Richard Henderson said: "Lorna has a considerable track record in promoting the interests of Scotland's business community.

"I am confident that she will use her talents to benefit one of Scotland's important and distinctive economic sectors."
