Fisherman takes fight to Court of Human Rights

A west coast fisherman is to make a protest against the Northern Lighthouse Board at the European Court of Human Rights.

Freddy Wiseman, from Aultbea in Wester Ross, claims he is being victimised for refusing to pay dues on his lobster boat.

Freddie Wiseman's principles have cost him his wealth, his marriage and at one point his liberty, when he was jailed for three months.

He has, though, never lost his will to fight what he claims is an unfair tax.

The Northern Lighthouse Board wants him to pay light dues on this lobster boat. But Mr Wiseman claims the law says he doesn't have to.

Fisherman Freddy Wiseman said: “I work on out of here and it’s classed as a harbour, and has been during the last years. The council, in fact, have put all round here little things by the view points telling you it’s a harbour. I mean, it’s there is black and white and the form says if you work within the harbour limits you’re excempt.”

The 67 year-old is now taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights. He is planning to unveil a banner outside the building in Strasbourg - while inside he hopes for a fair hearing.

Freddy explained: “I’m hoping to get a bit of justice because I’m certainly not getting it in this country. Solicitors have been all over. I’ve even phoned the Edinburgh ombudsman, he said it’s not for me. Onto London, they said not for me. Onto Southampton, not for me. Back to Glasgow and the man told me we can’t do nothing but I know a good solicitor in Aberdeen. So that’s the ombudsman, I thought they could do something.”

Over 21 years Freddie Wiseman's debt to the Northern Lighthouse board has swelled to more than £3,000. He says his fights is worth every penny.

The board says it is bound by law to make sure he pays it.
