Police name 'wrong way' M8 fatal crash driver

Callum Aitken: The 19-year-old died in the crash on Friday.

Police have named a teenage driver who died in a crash which sparked the closure of Scotland's busiest motorway.

Callum Aitken, 19, from Bathgate, West Lothian died in the collision with a lorry on the M8 on Friday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 39-year-old lorry driver was not injured.

The teenager's Fiat Stilo had collided with the HGV while travelling west on the eastbound carriageway, police said. The crash happened at around 1am on the M8, about one mile east of Harthill.

Police said they had received reports the Fiat was driving the wrong way down the busy motorway after joining at junction 3A.

Lothian and Borders Police were forced to close the road, which connects Glasgow and Edinburgh, for nearly five hours while investigators examined the scene.
