STV

A ceremony took place in Fife today to commemorate two Dutch airmen who died when their plane crashed during World War 2. The bomber came down in the grounds of Gilmerton House in 1941, but until now, their identities have been a mystery.

Today was a time to remember, those who were so nearly forgotten. Nearly six decades after their death, two Dutch airmen killed when their bomber plane went down in the grounds of Gilmerton house in Fife, were finally remembered in a memorial service.

The two men, Anton Marie ten Herkel and Willem Hijkoop, had were based at RAF leuchars in August 1941.  For years, the identities of the two men were unknown, until a local historian took up the case.  Thanks to his research, the niece of one of the airmen was today finally able to say farewell.

A fitting tribute and a missing piece of history finally put into place.
