A jealous boyfriend stabbed a man four times after he caught him walking his ex-girlfriend home.

Kevin Pollock tried to kill Scott Bonnar in Renfrewshire last year. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that had it not been for the immediate medical attention the victim received he may not have survived.

Mr Bonnar suffered wounds to his back, chest, shoulder and arm in the stabbing.

Lord Stewart told Pollock on Wednesday: "You attempted to murder Scott Bonnar by repeatedly stabbing him with a knife while he lay on the ground in what was in my view an unprovoked attack. You committed the offence while on bail and you have a record of knife carrying.”

Pollock, of Mallaig Road, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, was jailed for eight years for attempting to murder Mr Bonnar on June 2 last year in Methil Road, Port Glasgow.

Defence counsel Mark Stewart QC asked the judge to accept that the knife attack "was a one-off incident which was set against a background of some emotional disturbance".

The court heard that Pollock had been in a relationship with Nicole McCann but it was characterised by break ups and reconciliations in the weeks leading up to the attack.

Mr Bonnar had been walking Pollock's former girlfriend home when the 21-year-old attacker spotted them. She explained he was only walking her home, but Pollock said he did not believe that.

The men began shouting, which she heard as she made her way to her front door, before Pollock produced a knife.

Mr Bonnar ran off and was chased, but fell and was repeatedly stabbed as he lay on the ground. Pollock fled and although there were no eye witnesses to the attack the victim's blood was later found on his tracksuit trousers.
