A bakery worker phoned his mother and begged her for forgiveness after he killed a man who called his partner "stupid."

Dmitris Stalazs stabbed Daniil Ivanov to death in a row at his Lanarkshire home last year.

The 31-year-old had originally been charged with murder but his plea to the reduced charge of culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility was accepted.

The High Court in Glasgow on Friday heard that Stalazs attacked the 25-year-old shop worker after a row over his partner Anastassija Galitsina.

Advocate depute Stephen O'Rourke, prosecuting, said the two men were both from Estonia and became friends in Scotland.

Mr O'Rourke said: "The accused's partner Anastassija Galitsina asked the two men to keep the noise down because her young son was asleep. She then asked Mr Ivanov to leave and he said she was stupid. The accused took offence at this and a row developed between the two men."

Stalazs, who worked at Lightbody's Bakery in Hamilton, admitted killing Mr Ivanov on January 12 last year, at his home in the town’s Hill Street.

Miss Galitsina dialled 999 and heard Stalazs saying: "God, what have I done." He then phoned his mother in Estonia and told her: "Mother forgive me. I have just killed a man."

The court heard that Stalazs was examined by psychaitrists and found to be suffering an abnormality of the mind at the time of the killing caused by a panic disorder and agoraphobia.

Defence counsel Tony Graham said: "From the outset he has admitted his culpability for the crime of culpable homicide. He realises his actions must have caused distress to the family of the deceased. He told me that every day since he has regretted his actions. He has taken the life of somebody."

Judge Lord Matthews remanded Stalazs, who has no previous convictions, in custody and deferred sentence until next month for background reports and a risk assessment.
