A dog has been found in an "awful state" and weighing just half her ideal body weight.

A local dog warden found the white German shepherd in North Street, Bo’ness on Wednesday and called the Scottish SPCA.

The female dog, named Mia, was severely underweight, suffering from a womb infection and had painful sores on her body.

She was taken to the vets for treatment and is now being looked after by the animal welfare charity.

Inspector Leanne McPake said Mia’s owner did not give her the care she needed, leaving her suffering from various problems.

She said: "Mia was in an awful state when she was found. She is extremely thin and weighs just 16kgs, when a dog of her breed and age should be around 30kgs.

"She is also suffering from an infection of her womb which would have been causing her a great deal of discomfort.

"Mia has pressure wounds on her pelvis which may be a result of lying on hard ground for a prolonged period of time and these injuries would certainly have been really painful.

"The person responsible for Mia clearly hasn't provided her with even the most basic care she needs. Her claws were very long, indicating she hasn't been outside for some time and her teeth are in terrible condition.

"White German shepherds are quite unusual so we hope someone will recognise Mia and come forward.

"Despite the suffering she has been through, Mia is such a lovely dog. She will be provided with the treatment she needs to help her make a full recovery and then we'll be looking to find her a loving new home."

Anyone who knows who Mia’s owner was is asked to call the Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999.
