Council tax rates have been frozen in the Highlands for the fifth year in a row.

Councillors agreed not to increase rates when they met to approve the local authority's £600m budget on Thursday.

The council has identified savings of nearly £19m for the next year, but says no cuts will be needed.

The local authority plans to invest £4.5m into frontline services, including nearly half of that to be spent on repairing potholes and improving roads in the Highlands.

The multi-million pound budget includes £230m to be spent on education, culture and sport, £130m on social care and a further £63m to be spent on transport, environmental and community services.

Councillors also agreed to keep the rise in council house rent below inflation.
