More than 50 firefighters tackled a blaze at a university building on Tuesday night.

Students were evacuated from the University of Strathclyde's James Weir building on Montrose Street, Glasgow, when the fire broke out at around 7.15pm.

The adjoining Union, on John Street, also had to be evacuated in the city centre.

Crews were said to have been faced with a well-developed blaze, and their operations were made "complicated" by the presence of hazardous chemicals.

The building houses lecture theatres and classrooms used by the university's chemical and mechanical engineering departments.

Reports have suggested the fire may have been caused by chemicals, but the fire service was unable to confirm it.

Crews with extra breathing apparatus were used as firefighters broke windows in the bottom floor of the building to gain entry. There were no reports of any injuries.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Jim Doyle, who was in command of the incident, said: "Firefighters fought through acrid smoke and intense heat in an extremely complex building with interlinking corridors to fight this fire.

"Operations are still under way, but crews have made good progress in controlling the blaze to this point. We anticipate being on the scene into tomorrow as we continue to deal with this incident."

Strathclyde University confirmed on Wednesday that all classes in the James Weir building would be cancelled for the rest of this week.

Student Union president Charandeep Singh called emergency services after spotting flames from his office.

He told STV News: "We evacuated the union as a precautionary measure. Around 150 students were evacuated within two minutes.

"I'm extremely proud of the staff and the fire brigade who dealt with the situation swiftly and calmly ensuring the safety of students. I will assess the situation as it develops with the appropriate people."

Streets in the area remain closed and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
