A 21-gun salute was fired from Edinburgh Castle to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's Accession to the throne.
On February the sixth 1952 the-then Princess Elizabeth was just 25, and on a royal tour of Kenya, when word came of the sudden death of her father King George the Sixth.
Since then Prime Ministers have come and gone, but Queen Elizabeth has remained a constant in British public life and is now the longest serving monarch after Victoria.
To reflect on the anniversary, Scotland Tonight spoke to Royal author Roddy Martine.
