A drug dealer was caught with heroin worth £100,000 at Dundee railway station.

Police found more than a kilo of heroin in a backpack when they stopped James Stevens, 24, at the city's railway station.

The Liverpudlian drug dealer was jailed for two years at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday after he admitted being involved in the supply of class-A drugs.

Officers from Tayside Police went to the station after receiving a tip-off about large amounts of drugs arriving in the city on April 27 last year.

Detective inspector Mike Pirie said: "‘Quantities of heroin such as this have the potential to destroy many, many lives and I am delighted this is a kilo of heroin that will never reach the streets of Dundee, or anywhere else in the region for that matter.

"‘Another drug dealer is paying the consequences of his actions and he is no longer free to plot a course to Dundee and distribute this dangerous drug within our communities.

‘‘We have also sent a very clear message to the serious and organised criminals that their activities will not go unchecked in Tayside. We will find out what they are involved in and we will do everything within our power to curtail their sickening trade.

"‘They are harming our communities and the people within our communities and that is something that we will not stand for."

He appealed for people in Tayside to inform officers of drug dealing going on in their area. To contact police phone 0300 1112222 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
