There was an unexpected backlash against the decision to strip former RBS boss Fred Goodwin of his knighthood.

Former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling was one of a number of figures to voice their disquiet, describing the move as 'tawdry'.

Others view the event as a cue for a radical overhaul of the entire honours system. In particular, there have been renewed calls for disgraced Lords to be stripped of their titles.

Scotland Tonight discussed whether our honours system is fit for purpose, with writer and broadcaster Roddy Martine and with writer and musician Pat Kane.
